March 2010
Dear Members
NEWSLETTER
The end of another winter season is upon us and for many it couldn’t come soon enough. The 2009/2010 series was again a cold and tough year with cod in short supply, but on a brighter note, there does seem to be lots of small codling around, future fillets? – let’s hope so!
The Winter League Presentation was held at 5Leys on the 13th March. An enjoyable evening was had by all, especially Robbie Harrison who scooped “A” League and the Cod League plus several other specials. Steve Acklam also had an excellent year winning the “B” League and Heaviest Bag of the Year. Juvenile, Matthew Colling collected his first bag of trophies with his heaviest cod to date.
As ever, a massive thank you to Frank and Lilian for their efficient booking in service and for keeping all the books straight. Thank you to all the weigher-inners during the winter season. A list of all the final winter fishing positions is enclosed.
F.B.A.S. has moved Headquarters to the Foords Hotel in Queen Street, Filey. Committee meetings are now held in the lounge on the first Friday of each month and committee members have also received a key each for the brand new clubhouse door and weigh in station (next to the men’s toilets). The first angler back to weigh in gets all the drinks in!
The Summer League was another big success last year, especially the Friday nights. The Committee have again agreed a variation of nights and tides this year to hopefully suit everyone. Please note there will be a mackerel limit this year, with only 10 mackerel per person, per match to be allowed.
Here are the dates for the Summer matches, fishing times are start 6.30pm and to weigh in by 10.30pm (except Foords Match)
Friday 21st May
Wednesday 26th May
Friday 11th June
SUNDAY 13TH JUNE – FOORDS MATCH 10am to 3pm. Weigh in by 4pm.
Friday 25th June
Friday 2nd July
Wednesday 14th July
KAYAK FISHING MATCH to be held on SUNDAY 25TH JULY 2010 – start 11am to weigh in by 4.30pm (if bad weather then the alternative date will be Sunday 8th August – start 9am with weigh in by 2.30pm)
THE 88TH ANNUAL FILEY FISHING FESTIVAL 4th to 12th SEPTEMBER inclusive
JOHN SMITH’S OPEN MATCH TO BE HELD ON SUNDAY 7TH NOVEMBER 2010- fishing time 9am to 2pm with weigh in no later than 3pm
Please note that there is no fishing from Bempton Bird Sanctuary cliff tops (north side of Staple Newk). The entire cliff top is out of bounds DAY OR NIGHT from 1st April to 1st October.
F.B.A.S. are proposing to hold a kids “Catch and Release” fishing match this year on Filey beach, to replace the Bridlington match which is no longer running. This provisionally will be held on Sunday 10th October 2010 and the club will be looking for prizes and helpers on the day to co-ordinate this event.
All members are reminded to support the Fishing Festival. We are trying to attract more anglers to this year’s Festival, whether it’s a prize for the table for if you fancy flashing the cash and sponsoring an event it’s up to you. If you sponsor £50 or more then this will entitle you to a free advert in the Festival brochure (you must confirm by the end of May, before the brochure goes to print). Please contact Carolyn or Adrian and we will arrange.
Just a reminder – if any member fishing in a shore match, or even when just pleasure fishing, happens to hook a big fish, they may be entered for the “TITCH TROPHY” with a £50 prize sponsored by the F.B.A.S. To qualify the fish must be weighed in at the Club Headquarters (the Foords) by the official weigher-in or by a committee member. The competition runs from 1st January to 31st December, and the fish to beat so far weighs in at 9-10-0 caught by Robbie Harrison.
The Club is still selling it’s superb F.B.A.S. smocks and polo shirts. These are subsidised by the Club and are a proven fish attractor to make sure you get yours! Ideal presents for birthdays and Christmas, with smocks at £15 and polo shirts at £10 – a lot cheaper than last year, so see Andy Colling if you are interested in a bargain!
Don’t forget to view the F.B.A.S. website for all Club news and future results.
Tight Lines!
